However, Florida's abundant vegetation, while beautiful, can impact the cleanliness and durability of these structures.

Untreated natural stone exposed to Florida's elements becomes susceptible to contamination by living bio-organisms and layers of organic growth. The process begins when these high-traffic areas accumulate dirt and debris. As trees shed leaves or release pollen onto soiled surfaces, they break down and create tannin stains. Florida's frequent rainfall acts as a catalyst, driving decay deeper into porous stone and creating an ideal environment for destructive organic growth.

The initial stages of heavy organic growth include mold and mildew, followed by strands of green algae. While these species are unsightly and create slippery surfaces, they don't significantly compromise structural integrity. However, they do pose allergy risks and pave the way for more destructive species. One such threat is black airborne algae, known as Gloeocaspa Magma, which feeds on the stone's calcium deposits. The most corrosive species is lichen, a combination of algae and fungus appearing as green or black dime-sized dots in shaded areas with existing organic stains. Lichen's acidic properties can penetrate deep into the substrate's pores, potentially causing permanent discoloration and significant cracking if left untreated.
